in 1990 at Main Street Theater’s 100 seat Times Blvd. Location. The goal was
to gather songwriters together in a smoke-free, nurturing, theatre environment
where the focus is on the songs and the people who write them. The
“in-the-round” format helped to create a warm informal atmosphere conducive
to spontaneity. It has also revived the true tradition of music making, allowing
audiences to become a part of the music. Over the past fifteen years
we have presented local songwriters alongside well-known artists from around the
world in this living room atmosphere. We have had the pleasure of bringing to
our living room the music of Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, Townes Van Zandt, David
Amram, David Broza, Carolyn Hester, Lucinda Williams, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Patty
Larkin, Buddy Mondlock and Loudon Wainwright, III to name a few. The
collaborative nature of performing in this style draws out stories and the
beginnings of new creations. Often the combinations become infectious and the
show continues in tours across the country. With the help of our many devoted
music fans and volunteers we have helped to launch dozens of performance rooms
and house concerts throughout the country. In the year 2000 we began
our Writers in the Round Music Camp teaching guitar, voice, bass, piano, violin,
mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, music business, performance and the art of
songwriting to children and adults of all ages. Through our Performing
Artist in Residence program we are now offering private,
semi-private and group lessons for Guitar, Bass, Voice, Piano, Violin, Dulcimer,
Mandolin, Banjo, Congas, Percussion and Drums year round! Along with our Main Stage
Concerts at Main Street Theater featuring well-known Songwriters, we have
incorporated (KIC) Kids in Concert and (YPA) Young
Performing Artists in our cozy WITR Headquarters Performance Room at 6221
Edloe. This up close and personal performance room is the collaboration of a
Southside Place Eagle Scout Project (Ted Boozalis), a Henderson State
University visual Artist (Blake Norris), and the ideas of many of our
WITR summer campers. The creation of this room has added a home for all of our
young performing artists and their friends and families. It is the perfect size
to showcase our “out of the ordinary” children who write songs and perform
them. On October 24, 2004 from
5-10 P.M. WITR opened up this performance room to over 100 friends with an
intimate concert, a picnic, guitar auction and fundraiser featuring our 15th
Anniversary 2004 – 2005 Performing Artists in Residence: Linda Lowe,
Bill Cade, Steve Carr, Cordt Akers, Joe Romano and Susan Elliott. Following
their performance these seasoned musicians accompanied over 30 Young
Performing Artists and Kids in Concert on piano, bass and
guitar. The Kids in Concert performed original songs and
music from the 60’s to a sold out house. The following is a list of talented
performers and songwriters who were showcased at this event:
